Discover Bhubaneswar – The Cultural Heart of Eastern India
Imagine creating your art in a city where ancient stories whisper through temple stones, where every corner blends history, spirituality, and modern life in perfect harmony. Welcome to Bhubaneswar – the city of Temples, your gateway to India’s golden cultural triangle and the home of the Kalanirvana International Art Residency (KIAR).
This vibrant city is a living museum, home to hundreds of Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain temples and rock cut caves dating back to the 3rd century BC–13th century CE. These intricately carved wonders reflect the Kalingan architectural style, unique to this region of India. The city have the past histry of the world famous Kalinga War which was faught in 3rd Century BC. Walking through Bhubaneswar is like stepping into a time capsule—every structure tells a story, and every street has a soul.
Together with Puri (a sacred Hindu pilgrimage town) and Konark (famous for the Sun Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site), Bhubaneswar forms the “Swarna Tribhuja” or Golden Triangle—one of Eastern India’s most fascinating and spiritually enriching travel circuits.
But Bhubaneswar is not just ancient—it’s also surprisingly modern. After replacing Cuttack as the capital of Odisha in 1948, the city was reimagined by German architect Otto Königsberger as one of India’s first planned cities—joining the ranks of Chandigarh and Jamshedpur. Today, it balances the elegance of temples with wide boulevards, thriving art scenes, modern cafés, and a growing creative community.
So when you come to KIAR, you're not just getting a studio—you’re stepping into a city that inspires, energizes, and connects. Whether you're sketching beside centuries-old temples, capturing everyday life in tribal markets, or soaking up sun on the coast nearby—Bhubaneswar offers endless inspiration for the curious soul.
Come, explore Bhubaneswar—where heritage meets harmony, and your art finds its rhythm.
